In November 2018, a Clean Air Plan for the period 2019–2020 was adopted, based on which Programmes for the Reduction of Air Pollution for 2019–2021 were prepared and implemented, financed with budget funds in the amounts of 121,000,000.00, 100,000,000.00, and 80,000,000.00 denars respectively, aimed at financing measures to reduce air pollution. The activities under the programme refer to replacing existing non-ecological heating systems in households, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, increasing energy efficiency, and arranging urban green areas.
A new National Plan for the Protection of Ambient Air Quality and a National Programme for Air Pollution Control are currently being prepared within the IPA 2 project “Support for the Implementation of the Air Quality Directives,” and they are expected to be completed and adopted by the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia by the end of 2026.
