Air emissions

National emission projections

  • Emissions projections are an important tool for monitoring progress towards emissions targets and there are international obligations to report projections to both the European Union and the United Nations. The obligation to submit projections is every 4 years, by May each year. The substances for which there is an obligation to calculate projections in accordance with the requirements of the protocols to CLRTAP are the following:
    • Primary pollutants: (SO₂, NOx, CO, NH3 and NMVOC)
    • Particulate matter: (TSP, PM10, PM2.5)
    • Priority heavy metals: (Pb, Cd, Hg)
    • Additional heavy metals: (As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Se, Zn)
    • Persistent organic compounds (PAHs, dioxin, HCB, PCBs)

The projected emissions for the substances for 2025 and 2030 should be reported using the template contained in Annex IV available at site They present preliminary scenarios “with measures” (WM) and “with additional measures” (WAM).

The projected emissions of the main pollutants will be calculated within the framework of the ongoing IPA II air project “Support to the implementation of the air quality directives”, by the end of this year.
