In order to regulate the method of measuring air quality, establishing limit and target values for individual pollutants, assessing air quality and the method of informing the public about the state of air quality, the following bylaws have been adopted:
Regulation on limit values for levels and types of pollutants in ambient air and alert thresholds, deadlines for achieving limit values, margins and tolerance for limit values, target values and long-term objectives (Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 50/05, Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 4/13, Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 183/17). The regulation and amendments define the standards for the following pollutants: sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, benzene, carbon monoxide, PM10, PM2.5, heavy metals (Pb, As, Cd, Ni), Benzo(a)pyrene and ozone.
With Rulebook on criteria, methodology and procedures for assessing ambient air quality (Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 169/13) defines the upper and lower thresholds for polluting substances, the methods for assessing air quality, as well as the criteria for collecting and calculating statistical parameters.
In Rulebook on the content and manner of transmission of data and information on the conditions in ambient air quality management (Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 138/09) defines the manner of informing citizens and the types of reports in which the air quality situation is presented.
Rulebook on the methodology for monitoring ambient air quality (Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 138/09) defines the reference methods for measuring the concentrations of polluting substances, the criteria for determining the micro and macro locations of the measurement points, as well as the minimum number of measurement points in each zone/agglomeration.
In The Rulebook on the detailed conditions for performing certain types of professional work, in terms of equipment, devices, instruments and appropriate business premises that should be met by entities performing certain professional work for monitoring ambient air quality (Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 69/11) describes in detail the conditions that accredited laboratories for measuring ambient air quality must meet.
